distributors/retailers

Megatalogo: Italian distributor of fine music, soon to include BF...

Northcountry Distribution: perhaps our favourite distributor, based in the US

Open Door: BF's German distributor, although no on-line BF ordering as far as we can tell. The site's a bit tricky if you're a not a German-speaker....

URBBob: OK, one for bass players really, but if you're interested in double basses and their accessories, give him a visit.

Verge Distribution: another fine distributor, based in Canada

labels

AMP: New Music label and publishing house based in the music department at APU, Cambridge

Discus Records: Martin Archer's label; improv, new electronica, ambient, lots of Archer experiments

Erstwhile Records: US electro-improv label; released VHF's Extracts album

FMP (Free Music Production): the legendary Berlin-based home of free jazz, and much more besides

Incus Records: One of the longest-standing and finest of the UK's musician-run labels; the source for Derek Bailey-related material

Irrational Arts: Mysterious small label with an unfinished website; might be worth checking out at some point...

Middle Class Records: Interesting small label who asked to be linked; very amusing catalogue, although we've not heard much of the music.....

media/critics etc

All Music Guide: website guide to recordings of all kinds of music, including much of the 'avant-garde'. Watch out for the "expert reviewers" though, some patently are no such thing...

allrecordlabels.com: where to find details of all your favourite independent labels

Dimensions In Jazz: North Dakota Public Radio's redoubtable jazz programme, hosted by William Kenz. You can check out past playlists & listen to the current programme. Watch out for links that have the www. part of http://www. missing...

European Free Improvisation Pages: The site for information about EFI; indexes, directories, biogs, downloads, links. Run by the indefatigable Peter Stubley

Jazz On 3 (BBC Radio 3): The emergence of Jazz On 3 is one of the most exciting things to happen to the scene in many a year. The programme's website includes webcasts of live and studio recordings, interviews, features, and a lot of support for the music we love. Support them back, and send an e-mail to Big BBC Brother saying what a fine job they're doing...

JazzNews.com: A website delivering daily jazz news, and rather dodgy jazz 'humour'. And when they say jazz, they mean proper jazz....

Jazzthetik: German jazz magazine, but with a reasonably broad definition of the term. A site for German-speakers only!

Jazz Weekly: Reviews, and lots more

Rui Eduardo Paes: Interviews and articles from the Portuguese critic

Paris Transatlantic: Fascinating cross-cultural review and information site

The Unheard Music: Bret Hart's reviews of improvised music recordings

musicians

Paul Hession: very nice site devoted to you know who

Jeffrey Morgan: saxophonist and all-round creative egg. Jeffrey played on the long-deleted Eight Classic Jazz Originals You Can Play (BFC 33)

Guilherme Rodrigues: "I play cello in the area of improvised music. Do you think it´s possible to put my page in your links?" (No problem Guilherme!)

George Russell: master theoretician, and responsible for some of the finest records in the history of jazz; one of the Great Jazz Composers

Stroma: New Zealand's premier contemporary music ensemble

recording studios

promoters

Baggage Reclaim: Richard Sanderson's monthly extravaganza at the 12 Bar Club; eclectic, exciting, intriguing - but don't just take our word for it...

Colchester Arts Centre: support them... their New Music programme needs an audience!

London Musicians' Collective: London's most significant experimental music promoter. Their website is packed with fascinating and useful information

Jazz Services: The site for British jazz info; watch out for typos & occasional inaccuracies though!
